     The opening ceremony of the "46th Session of the Panel on Tropical Cyclone” which is jointly organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) was held at (09:00) am on 9th September 2019 at Hotel Royal Ace, Nay Pyi Taw.

     The Union Minister for Ministry of Transport and Communications, H.E. U Thant Sin Maung delivered the welcome address. After that opening remarks were given by Ms. Sunithadevi Santhamma, Director General of India Meteorological Department, Dr. Sanjay Kumar Srivastava, Chief of UNESCAP and Dr. Taoyong Peng, Representing WMO Secretariat. Dr. Aung Thu, Union Minister for Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, Deputy Minister for Ministry of Transport and Communications, Permanent Secretaries for Ministry of Transport and Communications, Heads of Departments, Experts from WMO and UNESCAP, Experts from China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and International Center for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM) Japan, Delegates of Panel member countries attended at the opening ceremony.

      The objective of the panel is to improve tropical cyclone warning systems in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, including dissemination of technical information on tropical cyclone research and forecasting operations to mitigate the socio-economic impacts of tropical cyclone-related disasters.

     During the Panel meeting, review and evaluation for technical activities during 2018-2019 are undertaken at both national and regional level under the meteorological, hydrological, disaster prevention and preparedness, training, and research component. At the same time, review of Tropical Cyclone Operational Plan will conduct the formulation of procedures adopted in Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea for the preparation, distribution and exchange of information and warnings pertaining to tropical cyclone and also the experts will be discussed in detail to support the necessary techniques and information. Moreover, the new list of names of tropical cyclones will be adopted by Members and also contribution to the WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclone Trust Fund (PTCTF) will be discussed. The panel will continue to be held till 13th September 2019.
