Heat Wave

Heat waves are common in the central and subtropical regions of Myanmar in April and May. They are also common in western Myanmar due to the effects of prolonged heat waves that sometimes occur in India. They are especially common in strong El Niño and ENSO years, which are weather-related events. The record-breaking temperature increase in May 1998 caused high temperatures in the central and subtropical regions of Myanmar and the delta regions. The effects of heat waves can affect the health sector, water resources management, agriculture and crop production, so preventive measures, information warnings and awareness-raising should be implemented to the public. Relevant organizations should also use weather forecasts to prepare for them.
